We seek to maintain biodiversity in unprotected high biodiversity areas by promoting a long-term conservation process that integrates development, research, training, and education-outreach activities.
FANAMBY forwards three GENERAL OBJECTIVES :
- Maintain healthy natural ecosystems.
- Empower local communities and the regional government in natural resource management.
- Ensure long-term conservation of endangered priority endemic species not already under legal protection.

The pervasive degradation of natural resources in Madagascar has led FANAMBY to focus on improving the way resources are managed. FANAMBY aims to develop local competence in sustainable resources management in its intervention areas. Our conservation philosophy focuses on two objectives; one, building human resources capable of managing and protecting natural resources; and two, teaching rural populations the laws governing their natural resources. We have developed over the last 5 years a replicable conservation model, which is based on the creation of legally protected areas within the framework of a regional management plan. In compliance with the decentralization policy of Madagascar, these actions aim to empower managers at the local level and involve them in all initiatives from designing conservation and development programs to implementing them.
Regional management plans are developed through consensus of all local authorities, communities, stakeholders and NGO's. Group decisions are based on information compiled through project activities such as, natural resources zoning with GPS, and socio-economic and biological data collection. Regional workshops result in the identification of individual zones for core conservation, multiple usage, tourism and research. The collaborative process, which builds human resources, also instils ownership of project development needed to ensure sustainable project implementation. FANAMBY is currently developing management strategies in Daraina, Anjozorobe and Menabe.
FANAMBY has offices in both Antananarivo and Vohemar. The offices are staffed with local experts that are passionate about managing the Malagasy environment and the improving the capacity of local institutions and populations to conserve their rich biodiversity. The Antananarivo staff, comprised of the Secretary General, Director of Finance and Administration, Technical Assistant, Field Agents, Accountant, Secretary and Chauffeurs manage and implement FANAMBY conservation activities in Menabe and Anjozorobe and provide support for Vohemar. The Vohemar staff : regional director, director of accounting and administration, director of protected areas, the outreach agents, and chauffeurs implement the protected areas program in Daraina.

FANAMBY has developed collaborative relationships with
local, national and international organizations to diversify the management
expertise and responsibilities in their three project areas.
Daraina
In Daraina, Conservation International is FANAMBY's primary funding
and technical support partner. This relationship was forged since the
development of the Conservation International program in Madagascar.
Other partnerships in the region have been established with ANGAP (Association
Nationale pour la Gestion des Aires Protégées) the equivalent to the
national parks service and the MEF (Ministère des Eaux et Fôrets) the
Ministry of Waters and Forests service.
Anjozorobe
FANAMBY and the World Wide Fund for Nature are developing a collaborative
relation to implement the ANJOZOROBE project. WWF has been a major partner
of government institutions, communities and educational institutions
and has implemented a variety of conservation and development projects
in Madagascar. WWF and FANAMBY will be the driving force to transfer
human resource and technical skills to partner institutions such as
the services of Waters and Forests, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
that are essential for the success of the project.
Menabe
In Central Menabe, FANAMBY is working with Conservation International,
the World Wide Fund for Nature, Durrell Wildlife Trust, Deutche Primate
Zentrum (DPZ), the Swiss Cooperation and the Waters and Forests Service.
FANAMBY is initiating collaborative agreements with these members to
pursue two long-term conservation goals: (1) to conserve four endemic
species found in the Menabe forest and (2) at the same time provide
alternative land use practices to rural communities dependent on forest
resources. The tasks outlined in the collaborative relationships with
the team of ngo's will serve as the backbone for development and long-term
conservation through a protected areas system
